I like that idea.

Some of my dear friends have decided to wear ONE DRESS for an entire month to promote awareness of human trafficking and encourage people to donate to The Daughter Project

Here's the scoop on The Daughter Project:

// OUR PURPOSE
To help girls recover from the trauma of human sex trafficking and to help prevent them from being trafficked through community education. The foundation of this help will be Godly, biblical and holistic.
// OUR CORE BELIEFS
God is the creator of everything. God is the redeemer of His creation through His son, Jesus Christ. God indwells believers to transform them into His agents of redemption on the earth through His Holy Spirit. The Bible is Jesus Christ in written form. We will strive to operate our organization in a way that reflects His life of perfection and grace, for His glory and for the redemption of the girls we serve in love.
// OUR PROGRAM
To provide holistic healing services in an extremely safe, home-like environment to girls who have been freed from human sex trafficking. The services will include; spiritual mentoring, abuse & addiction counseling, health & nutrition education, medical/dental/vision care, legal counsel, and family/friend restoration. This help will be provided by caring & competent professionals & volunteers. In addition, we will offer education, job and housing assistance.

I like that idea-- the part about raising awareness for The Daughter Project. The other part (the one-dress-for-an-entire-month part) scares me.

Oh, hello, FEAR. My familiar friend, fear, calls the shots in my life far too often.

I can't imagine how scared the women who are suffering through human sex trafficking right now, this very second, feel. The fear they experience is something unimaginable to me...how my unknowing heart aches for them.

...is doing this mission for 6 months...(yes...ONE DRESS for 6 months). One brave lady.
The same dress...every single day.
What?? In our society, especially for women, this is unheard of. I remember in high school trying so hard not to wear the same lame-0 shirt twice in a row over (at least) 2-3 weeks....one dress..for one month? When Amy first started this mission, I was so inspired to follow her lead and do it with her...

And then the excuses came flooding in.
I don't have a dress that I could wear over and over again like that.
I'm not good with clothes
or fashion,
or style..
or creativity with outfits.
I'll just feel ugly after the 3rd day.
And so on...

When my sweet friend Christie Mook asked me if I would join her and the women in the pink house for one month...I gave her one of those..."yes, no, maybe so", kind of answers. So not only fear, but maybe even some commitment issues... maybe? yep. I think so.

"I've made it a commitment to consistently put myself in situations that scare me and require God to come through."
 -Francis Chan, from his book Crazy Love.

I'm going to do it.

Here's my prayer...

God I am counting on you to use this to spread your kingdom...your relentless love. I praying that we raise awareness for these sweet women. These sweet women that deserve to understand how precious they are, and have seen nothing but deceit, misuse, and darkness. Lord help all of us be a light for you in this fight, counting on nothing else but who we are as your daughters to feel beautiful. I pray that this not be about us or about an article of clothing, but about your sweet daughters who have suffered through human sex trafficking. Lord I am scared and I am unsure of myself, but I am counting on You to come through. In Your Son's name. Amen.
...

Whether it be through donation, joining in on the fight, or simply through prayer-- I ask you to consider joining us.

Here it is, ready to be over worn. Its a simple little thing for a very big thing.

  2. while this may seem like a good cause, and it is, because human trafficing is very wrong, a grave sin, be very careful how you go about it. as i read this, i'm reminded of Matthew 9, which i just read recently. specifically, the very words of Christ when He rebukes the Pharisees, telling them to learn the meaning of the words "I desire mercy, not sacrifice".

    now, i'm not calling you a Pharisee here, gelly, because i think this post shows what a tremendous heart you have for the poor, needy, and oppressed... what i am saying is that you need to be cognizant of how you're going about helping these people. thinking about it. does wearing one dress for a whole month or a whole 6 months really do anything for the women victimized by human trafficing? what does it really do for them?

    when i see this, i kind of play it out in my head... and it's initiatives like this, attempts to raise awareness that, all they really do is make people feel guilty about not doing more to help. ...however, they don't actually get much done. now, if you were asking people to donate to this charity as well, that's a different story.

    on the other hand, if you go to a local food pantry and see the poor and underpriviledged who come in every week or so, the people who are in need right here in our own community...well it becomes real. i'm not saying that the victimized women by trafficing aren't real... but God's giving you opportunities to show acts of mercy, true acts of charity, right here and now.

    i'm not saying that you shouldn't do this... and i'm not saying that you're not being merciful in the daily conversations that you have... what i am saying is be careful.

    and lastly, that francis chan quote... is problematic. it's almost like he's deliberately going to abuse the gift of grace, a gift that God doesn't have to give.

  3. friend, thank you for caring; I appreciate you wanting to speak truth if you had doubts about the cause.

    Yes, all of the women doing this together are asking people to donate and support TDP. I am also getting rid of 6-10 articles of clothing every week during the month that i'll be wearing the dress, and donating them to the Daughter Project. Thanks for your concern. We are excited about raising awareness for these women and expanding their group of supporters.

    The Francis Chan quote spoke differently to me. I want to choose not to live comfortably, as if there wasn't a God that I knew I could depend on. I could get a well paying job, work an 8-5 (and so on), living safely and comfortably...but would my life look any different if there wasn't a God?

  5. I don't have time right now to respond to the ridiculous anonymous comment, though I will later. For now, I have two things to say: I am proud of my sister and what she is doing. Secondly to the Anonymous commenter, How do you expect anyone to receive your thoughts or opinions, agree and/or believe in them, when you don't even believe in them enough to stand by your statement without anonymity? I'll address the actual content in your comment later.

    Gelly, Keep do'n what 'yo doing.

  6. I'm still working on commenting on things. I didn't mean to make it anonymous, I have absolutely no shame in saying what I said, and I would love to hear your brothers response to my post.

    PS Francis Chan IS the man though.
